Reflection - The Graphics Conversion Program
Copyright 1988 David W. Batterson
I've been crazy about computer graphics since my old Apple //c days. The
images and software keep getting better, and there is always something new to
learn.
Just like with word processing, communications and spreadsheet software,
graphics and desktop publishing files aren't usually compatible. That's the
nature of the beast.
It used to be a monster if you were using Mac, IBM and Amiga graphics, and
wanted to be able to go from one machine to another with the other graphics
files. You needed a programming wiz to help you out.
IMSI (International Microcomputer Software, Inc.) has the easy solution
with its graphics conversion program called Reflection.
Reflection finally gives you control over the mishmash of graphics formats
floating all over the place! IMSI is updating Reflection regularly. The
review copy was Ver. 1.10C.
If you're using a graphics file format not recognized by Reflection, it's
probably going to be in the next version.
Following is the rundown on formats supported now:
[ S = source file, D = destination file. NOTE: You can convert FROM Lotus
.PIC files but not TO that format. Similarly, you can convert only TO a
PostScript (.PSC) file, not FROM, since it is an ASCII file. The extension is
the DEFAULT name. Therefore you can still convert a file with a different
extension, such as READ.ME for a text file. ]
Type of File Direction Extension
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~
Amiga S/D .IFF
CompuServe S/D .GIF
Dr. HALO S/D .CUT
GEM Paint S/D .IMG
HP LaserJet S/D .HPC
InSet/Reflection S/D .PIX
Lotus S .PIC
Macintosh S/D .MAC
Microsoft Paint S/D .MSP
NewsMaster S/D .SHP
PC Paintbrush S/D .PCX
PostScript D .PSC
PrintMaster S/D .PM
Scanner TIFF S/D .TIF
Text S/D .TXT
If you don't see your paint or DTP program, don't fret. Look for the file
extension your software uses. For example, Ventura Publisher uses .IMG and
.PCX files. WordPerfect 5.0 will accept .TIF and .PCX formats. PFS: First
Publisher uses the .MAC type, while PageMaker supports .PCX and .TIF.
Gets confusing, doesn't it? Well, Reflection is menu-driven and quite
easy to understand and use.
The left side of the menu is for your source file and the right for
destination file. You don't even have to enter many types. Just press the
spacebar and a list of file formats is displayed below. Scroll through and
select your choice.
The extension names are entered automatically, or you can change them if
necessary. Change path, and options such as resolution, width and invert
next. When you're ready, pressing F10 does the trick.
The text conversion has a useful feature. If you are converting FROM a
text file, you have a choice of fonts that will be used for your graphics file.
These include ASCII, Computer, Helvetica and Roman. Be careful that your
source file contains only printable ASCII characters.
You can also convert TO a text file. However, you must first save any
text screen by using Reflection's Capture utility. Then the resulting .TXT
file can be used in your word processing program or text editor.
Capture does two things. You can capture graphic screens, and save them
to disk in the .PIX format. These can then be converted to your choice of
formats. You can also do a file capture.
File capture is useful when your image is larger than the screen. What it
does is capture the image data being sent to an H-P LaserJet printer, and save
it to a file. These files receive the .HPC extension.
Vector graphics files, like AutoCAD, can be converted by following this
method. (You can't convert DIRECTLY from AutoCAD to pixel-based paint
programs; you must use this procedure.)
Another useful feature of Reflection is the ability to run directly from
DOS. This allows you to set up batch files to automate the conversion of
multiple files. This can be a real timesaver.
Several examples of useful batch files are provided. Simply modify them
to suit your own needs.
While Reflection won't save a bad marriage, it will solve incompatibility
problems with graphics files. I recommend it without reservation.
Reflection is provided free when you purchase IMSI's PagePerfect. Or you
can purchase it separately. Contact IMSI, 1299 Fourth St., San Rafael, CA
